Agate Beach on Lake Superior

Grand Marais’ Lake Superior Public Beach

Agate Beach is a wonderful place to view the sunset each evening, gaze at stars or the northern aurora in the darkness or watch the waves when they are wild and crashing onto the shore. In the summer of 2005, Burt Township was able to add a boardwalk to Agate Beach to allow everyone to enjoy a spectacular view of Lake Superior. The boardwalk was funded, in part, under the Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972, as amended, Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. Department of Commerce, and the Michigan Coastal Management Program, Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. This structure was constructed with the help of the Alger County Camp Cusino Prison Work Team.
